The hum of bees is the voice of the garden

I started out as hobby apiarists 5 years ago after stumbling into a local Ann Arbor bee club meeting. I had always been fascinated by these bugs and after hearing the experts say that you can have your own hive in your backyard, I was hooked! Like many, I went out and bought a package of bees, all the equipment and thought I was prepared. It was highly recommended that I take a beekeeping course and I was so glad I did. Keeping bees is a lot more challenging and scary than I had realized, but I learned to put fear aside and replaced it with curiosity. Bees have a complex social organization, and are capable withstanding the intense cold Michigan weather. They are resourceful and work hard as a team to survive, something us humans can always learn from.
